“Think of every fairy-tale villainess you've ever heard of. Think of the wicked witches, the evil queens, the mad enchantresses. Think of the alluring sirens, the hungry ogresses, the savage she-beasts. Think of them and remember that somewhere, sometime, they've all been real.
Mab gave them lessons.”
― Jim Butcher, Small Favor

I was trawling through favim.com for a suitable picture prompt for today's challenge and I came across several which leant themselves to an 'anti' rendering of the traditional fairy tale genre. Many writers love to take the familiar story-line and twist it up a bit, mix in something dark and haunting, or turn a favourite heroine or hero into a more plausible and fallible anti-hero. I have read many inspiring poets, who have the creative ability to invent their own faerie tales.

I couldn't resist either of these pictures and hope that several of the poets who frequent the imaginary garden with real toads will embrace this challenge and produce enchanting pieces on this theme.

17 Toads & Flowers:
I love this prompt! Shall return:)
I'm writing something right now. <3
ah the unfairytale
perhaps the very best at them (or most extensive use of them...) - http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/briar-rose-sleeping-beauty/ - she has a whole book of them actually -
"I must not sleep
for while I'm asleep I'm ninety
and think I'm dying.
Death rattles in my throat
like a marble.
I wear tubes like earrings.
I lie as still as a bar of iron.
You can stick a needle
through my kneecap and I won't flinch.
I'm all shot up with Novocain.
This trance girl
is yours to do with.
You could lay her in a grave,
an awful package,
and shovel dirt on her face
and she'd never call back"
Thanks for linking up Anne Sexton's poem, OT. (sadly, I've thrown down my pen and now sit gaping in bemused wonderment!)
As if this weren't daunting enough before reading the Anne Sexton poem!
One up and one to go!
I adore this prompt. ADORE it! And the pictures, too!
That first picture is hilarious. Sorry I've been working real hard on something. Will soon catch up!
great stuff! and that sexton poem is unbelievable, OT.
the second picture is calling my name.
I love the prompt, and the second picture reminded me of an older poem of mine. Apologies to those of you who read it back in May.
I has fun with the second one - a cynical twist this time.
Just a fun post from me... I enjoyed this prompt very much ~
I have written for the second picture now, too.
I have posted a sort of response!
Many thanks to all who entered into the spirit of this challenge and visited the poems posted here, leaving behind your enthusiastic responses. This feedback means the world to us writers, and keeps us all striving to grow and improve.
