The Tuesday Platform

The First Day Of Winter

On the first day of winter,
the earth awakens to the cold touch of itself.
Snow knows no other recourse except
this falling, this sudden letting go
over the small gnomed bushes, all the emptying trees.
Snow puts beauty back into the withered and malnourished,
into the death-wish of nature and the deliberate way
winter insists on nothing less than deference.
waiting all its life, snow says, "Let me cover you.
- Laura Lush from The First Day of Winter. (Ronsdale Press, 1997).

December greeted me with a huge smile on its face and whispered "it's gonna get better," gently into my ear. Being my birth month it adds to the excitement of the coming year where anything is possible. At present, I am applying for a job as an English teacher in an Academy and keeping my fingers crossed for good news. Hey a girl can hope, right? I'll keep you guys posted! So, grab a cup of coffee/tea or anything you like and join me as I read others and delight in their poetry.

Best wishes in your new endeavor, Sanaa. I taught college, Business and Law courses for 22 years. It is a wonderful life, a lot less stressful than what I was doing getting and keeping astronauts in space. If you mess up with a class you'll have a fresh group next semester, a fresh start.
I liked your poem selectiom, I would love to be as light as a snowflake when I fall. But only then. I generally get messed up, sometimes with broken bones.
