Good Day, Toads! I hope that you all are keeping up with your writing goals this month. There are so many ways that we can go about it. If I am being honest, I have only completed a 30-day writing challenge only once before. More often, I tend to lose my pace within the first few days and if I keep up with it for longer, I just fizzle out by the last week of the month. But that's alright — as long as we are enjoying this practice, we can have some cheat days in between too. Ha!
For the tenth challenge of this month at With Real Toads, I would like you to pick up any book which is lying closest to you right now or pick one from your bookshelf. It can be a poetry collection, a novel, a dictionary, an autobiography, et al. Just pick up the book and open a page at random. Now, read out loud the first sentence of that page. So, this sentence is going to be your source of inspiration today. You can go about it in three ways:
- Use all the words of this sentence in a poem
- Pick a word or phrase from this sentence for the title of your poem
- Use a part or the entirety of this sentence as the first or the last line of your poem
Hope this will be a fun exercise for you. This is something that I do when my addled brain seems to be bereft of any words. Once you have written and published your poem, do not forget to add it in the linking widget down below. Also, visit others who have shared their written word and enjoy the many diverse voices that we encounter and cherish here. Happy Writing!
Good morning, Toads! We're a third of the way through April and I'm pleased not to have missed a day yet. I'm travelling home this afternoon and should be back to normal tomorrow. I'll do my best to catch up with reading and commenting.
ReplyDeleteOh! Love this idea, Anmol. I've never tried this before. Will definitely try this, not today but later in the week. Cool!
ReplyDeleteLoved the prompt, Anmol!💜 I will be back in a few hours to read and comment 😊 last day of renovation in my house. Happy Wednesday, everyone!💜
ReplyDeleteI just closed my eyes, opened the dictionary, and pointed a finger.
ReplyDeleteI chose to randomly open a tanka collection I keep on my nightstand, and used all words of the first line of a poem by Tsukamoto Kunio. Thank you for the inspiration, Anmol.
ReplyDeleteI took a different approach to my chosen poet of the week, Marianne Moore's pieces by selecting one at random from my anthology and going with her opening sentence. Definitely a poem which brings together several of my sources of inspiration for April. Thank you, Anmol.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning! Great prompt Anmol! Thank you. I had Mary Oliver's book House of Light next to me, so chose one from there...
ReplyDeleteHey, everyone! I am glad that the prompt worked well. I am looking forward to reading all of you and enjoying your use of the words thus selected.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been regular to the challenges here but I have posted a poem daily thus far during this month. This is a transition period yet again for me and there are some important decisions I have to take; so that keeps me occupied mostly. Please bear with me as I catch up with you all in a couple of days.
Happy Writing!
Oh, I love this. It has brought out another writing for my Twila series
ReplyDeleteUnlike others I found this challenging. I could have cheated and gone and got a different book, but I wanted to honour the spirit of the prompt. Then I contemplated just skipping a day, but I didn't want to beak my record. What I've written is something I'm glad to have recorded; I just don't think it's very poetic. Never mind, it's good to be challenged at times.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the challenge I ended up going with my 3rd finger pointing attempt - it was an unusual book - a hiking guide through the mountains I live in and the first two were just too dry. I hit the jackpot with my third attempt. I am catching up with commenting - I have four more posts to catch up with and of course this one... I will make it, please be patient.
