Today's poetic exercise is about seeing and renaming objects. It is a fun exercise to glance again at the ordinary and twist it. I am sure we all did this when we were young, made up names for places we frequented, perhaps that annoying cousin, or we had code words with a friend. Select an object and give it a new or made up name. For example, call a mushroom a plump cloud. Write down your made up name. Now describe your object by comparing it to something else.
Perhaps honey?
What does it look like?
Where did you find it?
Honey mushroom
floating in a glass like a plump cloud
Now ask the object to bring you a quality that it has or you need.
Example:
Honey mushroom
floating in a glass like a plump cloud
bring me your love
of dark places
Here is the format:
Name(made up or real)
you look like
bring me...
See what you can come up with and share.
Here are a few of mine:
Tigress moth
gliding through air like a flower petal
bring me your desire of dancing
all day long. (butterfly)
Freckled mushroom
hiding under my cucumber leaves like a rock
bring me your idle charm and love
of hide n' seek. (toad)
wind globe
swaying in the sunshine like a graceful fairy
bring me your seeds of hope and desire to move
(dandelion)
This is an exercise from the book, "Poem Crazy" ~Susan Goldmsith Wooldridge
I love how just a simple play on words can alter the view~
This is a super idea, Ella! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI will post on my blog later. I am sorry about the photos being out of order. I actually have a great toad photo, but was in a hurry this morning. My daughter had a dental procedure. We went school shopping and I just got home. Blogger gives me issues with my pics. Sometimes I can't see them, till I get on my husband's laptop. Thanks Kerry for the Linky ;D
