Veda Hille is the artist who comes to mind in all of my let’s-move-to-Canada fantasies, for all her quirky goodness that has been for years supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Supporting arts and music, how civilized! I have been wanting to share Veda Hille's music here for some time, and in my exploring of her recent work for this prompt, I discovered this new and inspiring project that I think will resonate.
“Beautiful Mother” is from the soundtrack of a play called Peter Panties, “a radical re-imagining” of the story of Peter Pan, produced by Neworld Theatre in Vancouver. Veda Hille composed the music for Niall McNeil’s songs, including this one. I would love to see this performance; please click and check out the videos about the production. It’s dubbed as “A radical re-examination of the creative process and a kick in the crotch to our assumptions about difference.”
If you’d like to hear more of Veda Hille’s music, please explore her website. I first fell in love with Veda when her album Spine came out and was lucky enough to see her live in two very intimate performances about 15 years ago or so. You can listen to some of her music by clicking “Music Player (Play In Popup)” on the front page (left) of her website. Love her. Enjoy!
Very cool, thanks for the introduction Marian. ~ M
ReplyDeleteWow. Thank you for this, Marian.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your introductions to some really cool artists - such a change from the conventional mainstream.
ReplyDeleteYou've taken us to music school ~ grad level .. love experiencing NEW.
ReplyDeletevery cool. glad you like. xo
ReplyDeleteI went simple here after listening to a number of Veda's songs--all have unique lyrics and haunting repetitions. I really find her wonderful. I wish one of her sites had a summary of the sequences in the Peter Pan play!
ReplyDeleteSusan... i love your refrain. magical.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to figure out the radical aspect of this song. Is the young woman transgender? What of the mother who was profoundly mentally challenged? I am a musician and I confess, other than thinking this was a touching song of mothers and daughters, I didn't get the kick in the crotch I was expecting... and you know how crotchworthy I am, hee hee hee. Pls comment or email me. Thanks, Amy
ReplyDelete"kick in the crotch" & radical re-examination describes the production of Peter Panties that you can find snippets of if you follow the link in the second paragraph above. not sure the song itself is that, or the video; i experience them more gently. didn't mean to confuse; i landed on this new song/video from Veda and had not known that she was involved in the soundtrack for this production. i find it all quite fascinating, but as with all of what we do here, it's subjective.
ReplyDeleteMine was actually more inspired by the Peter Panties video. I hope that's okay?
ReplyDeleteof course it is! i include much in these prompts, attempting to provide much inspiration. love yours, Mama Z.
ReplyDeleteI was inspired by Ms. Hille's music and her use of the non sequitur ...
ReplyDelete(Soapland Serenade is a great little song.)
I love the tone and titles-for some reason I can't get my sound to play on some of the pieces?! I like this challenge! Thank you Marian :D
ReplyDeleteI've been for all day and getting home now. I so enjoy your musical prompts. Will post a bit late.
ReplyDeleteLove the prompt Marian. I had never heard of Veda Hille before. I listened to several of her videos and Strange, Sad from her Spine album inspired me to write me piece.
ReplyDeleteLoved the song...so soft..smooth...free flowing...free. Inspired me to write!!!
ReplyDeleteI did not get this was a prompt to inspire a poem, the journey lost somewhere in the longing for simpler times, polar bears and Churchill. So I enjoyed this songwriter, her view of things refreshing, some ideas I must abandoned in my video thoughts as light thru the briers and branches to reach her in the background. Links too, a trip to Northwest Territories. That would have been enough to read here even if I sat this prompt out.
ReplyDeletebut you didn't, Edgar, and I love your poem. all of these poems are so different and so interesting. what fun!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marian!! I did explore and find this artist to be very intriguing...Writing may not come of this due to time constraints but I appreciate the efforts you went to and enjoyed the music! ♥
ReplyDeleteMarian, like seeing this side of you in work. Your site doesn't allow comments, right?
ReplyDeletethank you, LaTonya! my blog no longer allows comments, but if you look to the right side, there's a "contact me" form which sends me an email. communication and conversation is welcome on any subject! hah.
ReplyDeletei have an occasional music prompt here that's been going for quite a while. if you're interested, you can follow the "music with Marian" tag and you'll see them all. lots of great writing! xo
