African Emperor Moth caterpillar as photographed by my friend Lillian Reddy |
I thought I would share this most exciting caterpillar my friend found in her garden last weekend. Actually there were hundreds of them, all dropping down from the trees to burrow underground for the winter, where they will transform into African Emperor Moths. I have never seen one before, but I immediately wanted to whisk it off to the imaginary garden. Isn't it spectacular?
Of course, it will have a long sleep now and emerge with wings come our September Spring. Although I have a long wait, I know that many must be seeing signs of Spring all around them, a very exciting time for poets.
As always, we invite you to share your poetical musings with us today. There are no restrictions as far as theme, subject or form is concerned but we do ask that your post contain some manner of poetry, as this is not a forum for photography or other genre.
What a fascinating caterpillar! I have a traumatic childhood memory with caterpillars. I lived in a building surrounded with trees where caterpillars would grow as if they were flowers and the boys who lived in the building would take them on sticks and chase us around the block trying to throw them at us. :S
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday Toads, it's always great to be here.
Ugly caterpillar! Huge! Kind of like this poem that was ugly. I hope this revision makes it more like a butterfly or moth.

ReplyDeleteThat is an absolutely amazing caterpillar, Kerry! Thanks for sharing it. I occasionally see the ones for Luna moths here--they too are huge and unfortunately, very slow-moving and easy prey. Enjoy the hatch!
