Welcome to The Imaginary Garden ...
September 13 this year, marked the centenary of Roald Dahl's birth in Llandaff, Cardiff, 1916. Dahl was a prolific writer of poetry, short stories and children's literature, with 200 million copies sold worldwide, translated into 59 languages. Read the wonderful article on BBC.com. With the recent passing of the beloved actor, Gene Wilder, whose portrayal of Willie Wonka is nonpareil, I have been thinking of the huge debt of gratitude we, as the collective members of the living human race have to the authors, publishers, book-makers, actors, singers, poets... all and any who have made it their life's work to tell our stories. It is one of the greatest legacies of creativity and intellect.
Today is our day to add a drop to the ocean, so our generation may also be represented in times to come.
Oh I do remember Roald Dahl, such a brilliant author.. especially his short stories... that you so often recognize because they were made into films...
ReplyDeleteI remember a little of his work, didn't remember is name at all. Thank you. I decided to show a bit of how old people live. They may have already left their mark or still trying. I didn't write about that part. This group and the increasing longevity has been on my mind and your intro here prompted me to tell some bit of it.

We've been celebrating Roald Dahl's centenary in libraries across the UK. He was the inspiration for this year's Summer Reading Challenge, which I helped to roll out in schools in our area - children and adults all love Roald Dahl. Although I enjoy his children's books immensely, I do love the darkness of his twisted stories for adults, of which I have the complete collection and dip into it from time to time to remind myself how deliciously creepy they are.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was Shel Silverstein's birthday--and indeed earlier this month was Dahl's. Two great poets & storytellers--I celebrated by recording some of their work! You can find them on my soundclound page(link on my site). I've linked up my latest post sharing some more visual poetry--hope you enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI need to read more Roald Dahl, thanks for the reminder. I've been guilty of mostly having seen the movies based on his books. Must fix that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday, everyone.
Ha. I just incidentally re-read James and the giant peach last night. So enjoyed. Thanks, Kerry. K .

...At the gateway to Magi's quaint and lovely little house they shouted. "Magician Magi! Magician Magi!" A thin wiry woman, with a stern face and eyes as sharp as a kiskadee, waved a stick at them and threatened “Go away from here you loud mouth children. Go away from here”. But they shouted even louder "Magician Magi! Magician Magi! " Then, the door to the house opened wider and the thin wiry woman, drawing the curtain aside, stepped outside and shouted back at them "What do you want”...

Where would we be without such wonderful talent to inspire?
ReplyDeleteHave read a few with my children.... I see I need to go to the library and check out more!
ReplyDeleteI grew up with his stories and now have the pleasure of sharing them with my daughter.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great post, I've been away for a few months and am happy to see all the creative faces here. =)
I have missed creating. I enjoyed the pieces today.
ReplyDeleteRoald Dahl! Big favorite!
ReplyDeleteHey friends, I have nothing to share right now. Just wanted to acknowledge that and send warm greetings to all of you! Hello! Enjoy! xo Marian
Oops! '17' is the correct link - sorry.
ReplyDeleteI have read and enjoyed and shared with generations of children (I was a teacher) most of Roald Dahl's children's stories - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made me feel ill (all that sweetness . . . ) His adult books are darker, not enjoyable as such, but interesting.
I'm adding a late entry...Ronald Dahl was introduced to me in school. School...the thing that has me Soooo busy at the moment. I took my school prompt: "Briefly describe a favorite teacher" to make some much needed poetry spring up in my life. Thanks!
