I am here to herald in the next chapter in our Prompt a Day parade.
Already this week Fireblossom had us traveling back to the time of cold war and doo-wop. Kerry took us on a philosophical pilgrimage, and now it's just you, me, and the bulk of Thursday to contend with. Which is why I am bringing you a very special out of standard prompt: the video challenge.
What (very few) of you toads may know is that I am a BIG time film buff of the worst degree: the elitist aficionado who moons over Kubrick's Strangelove and revels in the long, one take shots of Wes Anderson. I am the kind of film school drop out who calls herself a film school drop out without ever having actually gone to film school. So for today's challenge, I am providing one of my favorite scenes in film, one that has inspired me in the past. All you have to do is find a poem of your own in the footage and commit it to paper.
THE SCENE:
Today's clip comes from the movie Southland Tales. I am not going to tell you too much about the film itself or the scene. I am going to leave you to create your own narrative. To establish the right tone for viewing, I will mention that the setting is an arcade on the eve of the apocalypse. Oh, and also, that is Justin Timberlake in one of his first acting roles lip synching to the song of another pop band of the moment.
THE CHALLENGE:
Watch the clip.
Write a poem inspired by it.
That's pretty much it.
So go now, my muddy buddies, and bring back something shiny and unexpected.

Well, I am first again. I love the challenge Izy. It also helps that I love Justin Timberlake.
Wow. Not making it easy on me, are you?
Great challenge for today, keeps those little grey cells active, :-)
Wow. I want to check out this movie now! I LOVE Wes Anderson and Justin Timberlake is actually an amazingly good actor. Very cool clip!
This poem burst upon me during the video with all of those look-alike chicks! it's one of my revelation poems that often reads like sermons, but I can offer no apologies. I felt so alive and good during your prompt. Thank you, Izy.
is it getting hot in here?
Well, here goes... I think I needed to lighten up after my last several poems, but this may be lite verse at it's worst.
You young things go--I did what I could with this, but it made me feel ancient and haglike.
Hello all: I am so overwhelmed by your responses thus far. I will be trapped at work until the wee hours of the night, but I will be leaving you comments as soons as I can!
Me, too, Hedge! Want to share a room at the rest home?
@MZ: Do they have Malt-O-Meal? If so I'm in.
Ok - I got one! Oooooft! :o)
oh come on y'all: this is all ages stuff. I will have you know I played that Killer's song for my mom a little while back while on a long road trip and she loved it (especially when it got to the refrain of I've got soul, but I'm not a solider) hands to the goddess, she sat forward, turned the stereo up and afterwards said it reminded her of John lennon!
I really had trouble with this video. It sets back the women's movement 40 years. Nurses have fought for years for respect and fair treatment by doctors. Too much tits and ass for me.
/old fuddy duddy
Ok...wrote something after watching the video in mute...well it helped! phew!! happy to be here when i thought i might miss them...all..blame the deadlines at work!
WAY LATE... just got back from Spring Break. BUT my goal is to do all these prompts. I sketched a number of poems out in the evenings and will be catching up soon. Will be by with each prompt I do and sorry to be so late. Thanks Izy for the challenge!
