Head Toad challenges Coal Black!

phone rang. it wasn't even noon yet! it was kerry. she say, coal, here's your challenge: write somethin got somethin to do with that chick singer stevie nicks. here's a song, she say, and she hold the phone up to the stereo, geez louise, that woke me up good. i say okay okay, i'm on it.

see how she can be? anyways, here's my song i wrote while listening to stevie nicks sing "wild heart' at the much more reasonable hour of two a.m.

the night

by coal black

mama say straighten up and fly right.
she get that look,
that look in her eye.
i don't know why and i never could explain,
why i always do the same damn things again,
but the night...
the night...

day time flop down like a dog in the dust,
get out of it if i can, do it if i must.
but when the sky goes dark
and the air goes sweet
i'll sneak out the back door and then we'll meet.

now my man tell me, you better fly right
and he get that look,
that look in his eye.
i don't know why and i never could explain,
but i did it before and i'm doin it again,
cos the night...
the night...

day time flop down like a dog in the dust,
get out of it if i can, do it if i must.
but when the sky goes dark
and the air goes sweet
i'll sneak out the back door and then we'll meet.

I first read this on my phone in the dentist's rooms, and had to choke make a snort of glee. I love it! That wild heart is not easily tamed by a mother's words or husband's expectations.

A round of applause for Miss Black.

I so love this - I have seen the same look in a mother's and husband's baleful eye - why will That Girl not do what she oughta???.......love it, Coal!!!!! Stay wild.

Stevie would be green at this upstaging by a lowly roadhouse musician. Well done.

We do as our nature shows us: you are an owl. Great fun poem.

Stevie Nicks is one pretty girl with an amazing voice alright, Miss Coal.
Love your poem. I can really relate to "day time flop down like a dog in the dust" — I'm not a night owl any more (too old, too married) but I sure was once, when the sky went dark and the air went sweet. Oh, yes.
Now I think I'll lie down. It's not quite 10:30am, and I'm exhausted just from being awake.

Fun to read Coal, you made Stevie proud!
I'm an owl trying to change as my raven black hair fades!

I think Stevie could sing your song. So could Bonnie Raitte and a few others.
Just lovely and wild and, for me, it
brings smiles of hot memories.

Love this...oh and I got that "look" from my mama. It never did any good. My husband gives me a look, but it is more like "you're crazy." I'd love to hear Stevie sing this!

Fine lines Miss Coal!!! Your commentary made me chuckle...so humorous!!

Love the repeat of these:

"when the sky goes dark
and the air goes sweet
i'll sneak out the back door and then we'll meet."

Very effective!!

I'm a night owl out of necessity usually...mostly only that will have to change when school starts...

Fun challenge thanks you two... Love Stevie Nicks!

I love it, Coal. :)

This part's my favorite:

"but when the sky goes dark
and the air goes sweet
i'll sneak out the back door and then we'll meet"

Theres no holding them down, only holding on the best you can til you can't hold on anymore. You killed the challenge as you always do. Loved it.
