The Tuesday Platform

What Was Told, That

by Jalal ul-din Rumi

What was said to the rose that made it open was said
to me here in my chest.
What was told the cypress that made it strong
and straight, what was
whispered the jasmine so it is what it is, whatever made
sugarcane sweet, whatever
was said to the inhabitants of the town of Chigil in
Turkestan that makes them
so handsome, whatever lets the pomegranate flower blush
like a human face, that is
being said to me now. I blush. Whatever put eloquence in
language, that's happening here.
The great warehouse doors open; I fill with gratitude,
chewing a piece of sugarcane,
in love with the one to whom every that belongs!

Greetings poets, wayfarers and friends. Welcome to the Tuesday Platform, the weekly open stage for sharing poems in the Imaginary Garden.  Please link up a poem, old or new, and spend some time this week visiting the offerings of our fellow writers.

Today is Hiroshima Day. May no one ever repeat that horror again.

I love Rumi so much! And Hiroshima Day gives us much horror to remember, for sure. I live in such parallel awareness - of so much that is dangerously wrong - and of all the beauty and wonder we are surrounded by. Some days it all weighs so heavily. So I loved reading this poem.

Thank you Sanaa for hosting today, and posting the Rumi! My favorite interpreter of Rumi is Coleman Barks. He keeps a great spirit in his work. This is the 5th anniversary of my wife Kathleen and I moving to Seattle to be near our grandson Alex. I posted a piece containing reflections on leaving our home in Oregon.

Good evening all and thank you, for hosting, Sanaa. I'm afraid I couldn't write much today, as it's the anniversary of my father's death. I'll be back tomorrow to read.

I just met Jalal ul-din Rumi today. He was writing back with the ancient classics. Of course I've never had a literature class except British and American introductory ones. Both college, no high school ones. So a good pick for me, I love learning new.
Thank you, Sanaa, for hosting today, even when you aren't feeling well.
To the group, mine is NOT a 55 Flash, Mr. Linky kept that from my Sunday post. I did write short last night though, 32 words.
